Green is my sword to fight for a better living, make it yours too…… Saalumarada Thimmakka

Saalumarada Thimmakka (106 years), an ordinary woman, is one of the greatest and inspiring environmentalists of our times as she has planted over 8000 trees in 65 years.

The word ‘Saalumarada’ means ‘row of trees’ in Kannada language. Thimmakka has had no formal education and was married at the age of 20 to Chikkaiah, a cattle herder of Hulikal village. When she could not conceive even after 20 years of marriage, she and her husband decided to find solace in planting trees.

She started with her own meager resources to plant trees She derived great joy in watching them grow over the years and this gave her the motivation to plant as many as 8,000 trees over the next 65 years. The couple started by planting ten saplings in the first year, followed by 15 saplings in the second year and 20 saplings in the third year. They used to carry water for a distance of 4 kilometers to water the saplings.

Both of them treated these plants as their children and gave all the love and care they would have given to their children. She treats these trees as her children and proudly says, “my oldest tree is 65 years old”. One of the reasons for Bengaluru to have good rains during monsoon is because of the trees planted by her.

Thimmakka got recognition when she received the National Citizens Award in 1996. She was also honoured with Nadoja Award by the Hampi University in 2010. In 1997, she received the Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Award and the Veerachakra Prashasthi  Award. She won many more awards for her work. A film was also made on her life.

She is actively involved in environmental protection campaigns, afforestation programs and many other social activities. She also built a rainwater storage tank for her village. In recognition to her work, a U.S. environmental organisation based in Los Angeles and Oakland, California, is named as Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education.

Saalumarada Thimmakka is an inspiration to many in the world. Although she is 106 years old now, she still takes care of trees. This shows her dedication and passion towards work.
