Plastic bags have become a growing environmental concern. The contamination from plastic bags is one of the most prevalent pollution issues today. Polythene or plastic bags are synthetic substances produced by chemical reactions. They are polymers of inorganic materials, which are not biodegradable.

Millions of polythene bags choke and block waterways, drain, lakes and streams. Plastic bags stop the flow of rainwater and sewerage. This aids in breeding of germs and bacteria causing many diseases.  Animals mistake them for food. The plastic bags choke the digestive track of animals and may even cause death. Plastic and polythene bags and their remnants have been found in the stomach of birds, cows and dolphins. Some bags get snagged in trees and buses. The toxic smoke from burning plastic and polythene kills hundreds every year. Plastic bags take a year to degrade. The recent campaign of the Delhi administration against the use of plastic bags is a step in the right direction.  It has primarily put an effort towards changing the habits of people.

“Is carrying a polythene bag a convenience or a curse?” The choice to be environmental-friendly is our own. Let’s us bequeath to posterity - “a clean, green a healthy Earth”.,
